Farewell Monique….

As you all know, the day before we left for vacation, Monique Clayton succumbed after battling Cancer for a long, long time. I have a lot of respect and admiration for the way this lady confronted her illness and continued to live life to its fullest up until her final hours. Just knowing she was around was an inspiration for me. Wherever she is now, I just know she’s still doing it “her way!”

Winning Points!

I don’t know how everybody did at the Tulsa Regional. but I do know that LaDean, Judy G., Betty E. and Barbara S. all won a bunch of Gold points. Mega congratulations!

Also, this past weekend Betty E. and Barbara S. won over 5 silver points at the Norman Sectional and now each need less than 4 silver points to become Life Masters. It wasn’t that long ago when they had less than 100 points each. Wow!

August Birthdays Party Friday Aug 7

Pass the word. After everybody left on Wednesday, we decided to celebrate all the August birthdays on Friday August 7.

Since next week so many are going to the Tulsa tournament, and the following 2 weeks Linda and I will be gone, it seems like this will be our only chance to honor those whose birhtday is this month.

So, get there around 11:00 tomorrow if you can, bring something for a little potluck, if you can, and spread the word!

Sorry about the last minute notification!

Passing of Jim Waggener

It is with great sadness that I report to you that Jim Waggener passed away this morning. I’ll miss him.

STaC Game May 6

Wow! Felt like I was playing in the Blue Ribbon Pairs today the way all the NS pairs we played against were beating us up!

Well done!!

Montreal Relays

I don’t recommend this, but since a number of you have asked me about the Montreal Relay System, so here’s a link that can get you started.

aOpening 1NT

Lately, there have been a number of people opening 1NT with a lot more points than they’re supposed to have. This really isn’t legal. Basically, you’re allowed a one point discrepancy beyond your advertised range (so, if you have a bad 18 and your range is 15-17, then you can devalue the hand and open it 1NT). Anything beyond that, and you’re not legal. While it is acceptable to mistakenly miscount your points, it isn’t acceptable to repeatedly open 1NT with 20 high card points. Talk this over with your partners and make sure you understand this. Besides the fact that it’s bad bridge, if you do it at a tournament there’s a good chance you’ll be penalized.

Another Number

Seems like I can’t have a seesion where I don’t have at least one big negative number. This Wednesday it was Jean Scoggins and Dorothy Kennedy who set me 1100 in 5 Diamonds doubled…NOT vulnerable. The good news — it was a great sacrifice against their grand slam in clubs. The bad news — NOBODY bid the grand slam!!!! And this was the FIRST HAND OF THE DAY! Linda (who made the 5 diamond bid) asked me why I went down so many. I had no response.

Don’t forget that Friday Feb 13 we’ll be playing at noon at the AmericInn. We’ll get this Friday thing figured out as soon as we can.
